Christmas is also not a national holiday in Japan but many take the day off or spend the evening with their significant other.
KFC is a huge part of the Japanese Christmas. KFC offers a 'Christmas chicken dinner' that is extremely popular and has become a staple for Christmas in japan. One can even make reservations at KFC on Christmas eve to Due to endless marketing by KFC, many Japanese people believe that Westerners celebrate their Christmas dinner with fried chicken.
Television and media in Japan have created the model that Christmas is a time of romantic miracles and is seen as a time to spend with your boyfriend/girlfriend. It is expected that couples in a relationship will spend Christmas together and fancy hotels and restaurants are booked solid during Christmas eve. This is also a time for girls to reveal their feelings to boys (or girl) and vice versa. Gifts are often exchanged between couples and are usually 'cute' gifts such as stuffed animals, flowers, jewelry etc.
